The position is for the Head of Business Unit - Components of Quantum Technology at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF. The role involves leading and coordinating research and development projects for quantum technology and optoelectronic applications, with a focus on quantum sensing and computing. The responsibilities include strategic planning, project management, acquisition of new projects, networking, and developing new business models. The ideal candidate should have a PhD in physics, electrical engineering, or a related field, along with knowledge and experience in semiconductor lasers and quantum technologies. Strong communication skills, the ability to work in a team, and proficiency in German and/or English are required. The working time is 39 hours per week, and the initial contract is for three years with the possibility of extension.


  • Lead and coordinate national and international research and development projects for quantum technology and optoelectronic applications
  • Develop components and systems for optoelectronic and quantum technology applications
  • Initiate and acquire new research projects from public and industrial clients
  • Establish and expand networks on a national and international level
  • Manage research projects and coordinate larger collaborative projects
  • Ensure project and project cost planning
  • Develop new business models


  • PhD in physics, electrical engineering or a comparable field
  • Knowledge and professional experience in the field of semiconductor lasers and quantum technologies or systems
  • Experience in conducting public and industrial research projects and/or maintaining a network and contacts with industrial, public, and university partners
  • Strong initiative, commitment, and ability to work in a team
  • High communication skills
  • Fluency in German and/or English
  • Willingness to travel on business
  • Class B driver's license
