A Museum Experience for the Modern World, in 2010 Fotografiska was founded in Stockholm and in late 2019 opened its newest outpost in NYC's Flatiron District. These locations are complemented by expansion in Tallinn, and our forthcoming museums in Berlin, Shanghai, and Miami. Fotografiska showcases the greatest photographers, whether they're emerging artists or already established internationally.

Slated to open in 2023, Fotografiska Berlin is located at Oranienburger Strasse 60 inside a unique historic and cultural landmark and home to an unexpected mix of world-class art, vibrant cultural programming, and exceptional dining experiences. Housing 5,500 square meters, the architects Herzog & de Meuron have been assigned to carry out renovations to the cultural heritage site.

Responsibilities

The Director of Retail will curate an exceptional retail experience, centered on the vision of inspiring a more conscious world through the power of photography. In collaboration with the Fotografiska leadership team, the role is responsible for creating an exceptional guest experience and building community, while generating revenue. With overall responsibility for the retail space - including strategy, vision, buying, budgeting, systems, visual merchandising, creative brief, sales, staffing, logistics, promotion, performance, and experience - the Director of Retail must plan, organize, and prioritize activities in an efficient manner. They will set up and maintains time frames, budgets, KPIs, and performance targets that are reported on a monthly basis. This role will report to the General Manager of Fotografiska Berlin and will have the opportunity to work with peer retail leaders in markets like Stockholm and New York.

• As Buyer, source remarkable local merchandise to elevate the retail experience and merchandise strategy and establish the store as an inspiring destination that forms part of the overall experience, with a range of products that reflects the range & interests of Fotografiska’s guests, mission, values and focus on photography.

• Work with Local and Global exhibitions merchandise together with all FG branded merchandise must be developed in close collaboration with the global retail buyer. This is to create synergies across all our houses and build a global brand.

• Collaborate with the Director of Programming to conceive and develop programming experiences & facilitate relationships with retail partners, publishers, creatives & thought leaders, specifically as it relates to revenue opportunities and special events.

• Development and strategic responsibility for web shop and digital business in collaboration with E-com management, Marketing Manager and Marcom team

• Work closely with the Director of Community on cultivation, and with Exhibitions, Guest Services, Front of House, and Programming to develop new audiences and build community, membership, loyal patrons, and sales.

• Lead retail sales team:
  • Recruit, train, develop and supervise an outstanding retail team including but not limited to full and part-time store managers and associates, merchandise and inventory specialists as well as e-commerce representatives to ensure all team members reflect Fotografiska’s vision and values in their work.

• Work closely with Operations and Guest Services to ensure that the first floor provides guests with an exceptional first impression and enduring memory.

• Work closely with the Director of Finance to establish and maintain budget, analyze data, inventory control, ordering, projections, statistical and financial records - in order to maximize profitability and meet sales targets

• Oversight of retail cash handling and P.O.S. system. Work closely with Director of Finance to design and integrate systems and track revenue.

• Lead retail team’s creative visual merchandising - responsible for conceiving and designing seasonal displays, ensures optimal product display and a world class shopping experience. We aim to be the shopping destinations in each of our FG museum cities.

• Oversight of inventory management and stock control - ensuring inventory levels are monitored and discrepancies identified and developing strategies to minimize loss and discrepancies.

• Evaluate and develop ecommerce within Retail strategy.

• Work closely with the Marketing team to ensure Retail is integrated with brand messaging. Develop promotional materials and display.

• Current with retail industry trends, innovative solutions to challenges, new designers and products and competitive analysis

• Extensive (10+ years) of retail experience, ability to manage all aspects of retail operations.

• Fotografiska is open a wide range of education and experience in consideration of the Director of Retail role - we believe community is built better when it brings together folks from all backgrounds.
• Experience in the arts and cultural sector may assist in the role and appreciation of photography, art, culture and design will always be an asset.

• Ability to manage a budget.

• Strong grasp of operations, pragmatism and ability to work closely with overall museum operations.

• Experience as a Buyer, sourcing and developing products.

• Creativity and exceptional product knowledge across categories, with an eye for beautiful things.

• Multi-skilled creative professional with an innate appreciation of brand vision/ mission, and experience integrating retail with other aspects of the museum.

• Broad experience working in profit-driven organizations.

• Experience working in a start-up environment where systems and processes are not fully formed.

• Flexibility and inclination to take initiative innovate and find solutions to challenges.

• Strong communications skills.

• Culturally curious, independent, motivated, guest-oriented and socially conscious.

• An integrator within a team - understands operations holistically, has creative vision, fosters connections, and unites a team behind shared goals.
