Intro

The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) is seeking a Head of Innovation and Commercialization (f/m/d) to lead the technology transfer activities of the organization. The MDC is a renowned international biomedical research center dedicated to understanding the molecular mechanisms of health and disease with the goal of devising new diagnostics and medicines. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a growing portfolio of biomedical technologies, identifying and protecting intellectual property, driving commercialization through licensing and spin-off companies, and supporting collaborative research with industry. The position requires a completed degree in life sciences, further education in business administration or comparable professional experience, and professional experience in science, innovation management, and/or technology transfer in academia or industry. Aufgaben

  • Take responsibility for all technology transfer activities of the MDC
  • Supervise licensing associates and support staff and oversee the Innovation and Commercialization Office’s day-to-day operations
  • Manage a growing portfolio of biomedical technologies
  • Identification and protection of IP
  • Drive commercialization through licensing and creation of spin-off companies
  • Support collaborative research with industry and assist scientists in securing funding to develop commercial opportunities from their research findings
  • Promote awareness of IP and technology transfer and provide training to scientists as well as connections with investors and industry experts
  • Work with a variety of innovation stakeholders including academics, funders, potential licensees and early stage investors
  • Act as the MDC representative with national and international business organizations, institutions, and platforms, and at partnering and networking events
  • Work proactively with MDC administration, management, and other departments to develop and implement relevant strategy and policy in support of the MDC’s mission and vision
  • Provide strategic direction and advice on all aspects of intellectual property, technology commercialization and industry cooperation to MDC management

Anforderungen

  • Completed degree (Master’s level or equivalent) in the life sciences, preferably with a doctorate
  • Further education in business administration or demonstrated comparable professional experience is required
  • Very good knowledge of the funding system for technology transfer projects
  • Professional experience in science, innovation management and/or technology transfer in academia or in a related function in industry
  • Sound knowledge and experience in entrepreneurship, spin-offs, licensing and intellectual property rights
  • Experience with third-party funding management is strongly desirable
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, critical thinking as well as planning and organizational skills
  • Leadership experience
  • Independent, structured and goal-oriented work, strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Excellent project management and negotiation skills
  • Strong conceptual skills, especially for strategy development and implementation as well as organization development and processes
  • Fluent written and spoken German and English are essential
