The Access to Energy sector has overcome many challenges and the electrification of millions of users has shown that there is an opportunity that by the year 2030, most households will have access to reliable and affordable electricity.

The next challenge then is: When will small businesses and agriculture operators have access to the energy needed for income generating appliances? We strongly believe that the A2EI is the collaborative platform on which engineers, together with potential customers, can develop the required portfolio of “revenue generating machines” powered by solar energy.

Despite urgent needs, it has not yet been possible to commercialize appliances which are radically energy efficient and powered by direct current. This is partly due to a lack of engineering and innovation resources. The A2EI wants to close this gap – not only

with its own workforce, but as a host that provides the off-grid sector with engineering expertise, knowledge of the needs of customers, and financial resources.

As a collaborative and non-profit research and development institute, the Access to Energy Institute is determined to promote the solar revolution in developing countries. It will mainly supply solar powered solutions and equipment specifically for small businesses and agriculture operators.

The focus is on beneficial devices that enable users to generate stable incomes, create jobs, and build strong local economic networks. The A2EI makes itself available to the entire decentralized solar industry. The core resources are a dual A2EI Lab structure that combines the best of customer-centered development in East Africa (initially) and engineering know-how in Berlin.
